Create OnMetal Cloud Servers
Authored by: Russell Haering
OnMetal Cloud Servers enable you to boot bare metal servers through theRackspace Cloud Control Panel interface. This article shows you how toset up an OnMetal server through the Cloud Control Panel.
Note: For the parallel steps in the API, see Manage OnMetal Cloud Serversthrough the API.
Create an OnMetal server in the Cloud Control Panel
Use the following steps to create an OnMetal server in the Cloud Control Panel:
- Log in to the Cloud Control Panel.
- In the top navigation bar, click Select a Product > Rackspace Cloud.
- Select Servers > Cloud Servers.
- Click Create Server.
- On the Create Server page, ensure that you select a region inwhich OnMetal servers are available. Box (elzaigames) mac os.Note: OnMetal servers are available only in the Northern Virginia(IAD), Dallas (DFW), and UK (LON) regions.
- Click the OnMetal Server tab.
- In the Server Details section of the Create Server page, enter aname for the server and select the region in which you want the serverto reside.
- In the Image section, select an image for the server.Note: To avoid performance degradation, run the CentOS® 6.5 imageonly on a Linux® kernel release of 3.10 or later.
- In the Flavor section, choose the appropriate configuration foryour workload.Note: All OnMetal flavors include dual-bonded 10GbE Network InterfaceCard (NIC) interfaces that enable the image operating system (OS) toshare public and service network access redundantly in case one of theconnections goes down. For details about all of the available flavors, seeOnMetal Cloud Serverflavors.
- If you’re working with a Linux server, assign a public Secure Shell (SSH)key to the Linux server by either selecting an existing key or adding anew one. (If you’re working with a Microsoft® Windows® server, skip to the next step.)Note: You must create OnMetal Linux servers by using an SSHkey pair. For information about generating public and privatekey pairs, see Manage SSH Key Pairs for Cloud Servers withpython-novaclient.To assign an existing public key to a Linux server, select the key namefor an existing public key in the SSH Key list. You can also add anew public key by using the following steps:
- Click Manage SSH Keys > Add Public Key.
- Enter a Key Name.
- In the Region field, confirm the region in which you want touse the key.
- Paste the entire public key in the Public Key field.
- Finally, click Add Public Key.
- Confirm that the key appears in the SSH Keys list for yournew server, then select it.
- If necessary, create a new network and select the PublicNet andServiceNet options.
- Click Create Server.
Create an OnMetal server by using the command line
This section shows you how to boot the following types of OnMetal servers:
Note: To boot an OnMetal server, you must first install the novaclient.
Boot an OnMetal Linux server
Use the following steps to boot an OnMetal v1 server that is running Linux:
- On the Details page for your server, click the link under Log IntoYour Server Now in the right-hand column. For more information, see Connect to a server by using SSH onLinux or Mac OSXfor more information.
- Use the following command format to boot your OnMetal server, substitutingthe appropriate region:The following code includes example values:The output should be similar to the following example:Note: Although this output displays an administrative password, thispassword is not actually used. You can safely ignore it.The server takes about five minutes to build. You can checkthe status of the build by running the following command:The output should look like the following example:Within a few minutes, the server is assigned public and private InternetProtocol (IP) addresses. These IP addresses display in the output from the
show
command.After the status becomesACTIVE
, the server boots for thefirst time. However, the server is not reachable until the networkconfiguration is complete, which might take another few minutes.
Boot an OnMetal Windows server
Use the following steps to boot an OnMetal v2 server that is running Windows:
- To get the universally unique identifier (UUID) of the OnMetal Windowsimage that you want to use, enter the command
nova image-list
on thecommand line. - Use the following command format to boot your OnMetal server, substitutingthe appropriate region:The following code includes example values:
The API response provides an administrative password that you can use to login to your Windows instance.
Log in to the OnMetal server
This section explains how to log in to a new OnMetal server.
Log in to a Linux OnMetal server
After the server has booted, use the SSH key pair that you specified tolog in to it, as shown in the following example:
Note: CoreOS is only available for OnMetal v1 flavors. If you use CoreOS, you must sign in by using the username
core
.Log in to a Windows OnMetal server
After the server has booted, use Windows Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) orRemote Desktop to connect to the new server by using the administrativepassword that the API returned.
Delete an OnMetal server
Mecha Supernova Mac Os Catalina
If necessary, you can also delete an OnMetal server by using the followingsteps:
- Run the following command, replacing the example ID with yourserver’s ID and
iad
with the appropriate region, if necessary: Mr. knucklehead mac os. - Use the following command to view the status of the task:The output should look similar to the following example:Note: The server enters the task state
deleting
. OnMetalserver deletions take longer than virtual server deletions. This process typically takes a few minutes.
Configure OnMetal IO flash storage
The flash drives that are included with the OnMetal IO flavor areunformatted. You can combine them in a redundant array of independent disks(RAID) and format them in any way that you want. For more information, seeConfigure flash drives in High IO instances as Datadrives.

First, follow the instructions for compiling the other softwaredependencies, or install them using package manager software likeMacPorts or aptitude, depending on your system.
When you install APPSPACK, consult the 'platforms' subdirectory there. You may find a platform installation script that is suitable to yoursituation. Importantly, if you specify a --prefix=$PREFIX argument toconfigure for APPSPACK, keep track of what value you used for $PREFIX,you'll need it later.
Once the dependencies (including APPSPACK-5.0.1-C3) are installed, youcan proceed with ES. It ought to look something like this on aUnix-like system. Suppose you downloaded version 1.00 of ES. Then:

You may need to pass options to configure (see './configure -h' for thefull list you can use). Most commonly one will need to use the --prefixflag. If you do not have super-user privileges, you could do somethinglike:
Thus, the 'make install' command will deposit the ES executables andexample control files into the installation path. No libraries orheader files are installed. If you use the above example, then you getthis structure in your file system when all is said and done:
An example. Most supernova researchers I know work on Mac OS X. I liketo use MacPorts to install my Unix-like packages. This works alrightfor me on Mac OS X Snow Leopard with MacPorts:
Mac Os Mojave
Note that the above example is included in the script located at'platforms/osx_macports.sh' and you can just run that if you have thesame set up. Note that the example assumes that APPSPACK was installedat '--prefix=$HOME/local.' Exactly what you do depends largely ontaste.
